After 26 years of dedicated service to Illinois State University, Dr. Mary Elaine Califf will be retiring at the end of the 2024-2025 academic term.
Dr. Califf has been a cornerstone of the School of Information Technology (IT), serving as the School’s director from 2013-2019, significantly contributing to the growth and success of the program. Her unwavering commitment to education, research, and mentorship has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless students and the university community, especially in the College of Applied Science and Technology.
Dr. Califf's academic journey at Illinois State University is distinguished by her extensive expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing. She earned her Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and holds multiple degrees from Baylor University, including an M.S. in Computer Science, an M.A. in English, and a B.A. in English.

Throughout her tenure at Illinois State, which began in 1998, Dr. Califf has been instrumental in advancing the School of IT’s curriculum and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
In recognition of Dr. Califf's profound impact on the university and its students, we are proud to announce the establishment of the Califf Scholarship for Academic Excellence. This scholarship aims to support outstanding students within the School of Information Technology, continuing Dr. Califf's legacy of nurturing talent and promoting student success in IT.
Your meaningful gift will help us reach our $25,000 goal by June 1 to launch this endowed scholarship fund with the Illinois State University Foundation.
