Horticulture Center Gator

The ISU Horticulture Center covers 23 acres.  Each time our students, staff, and volunteers travel from one extremity of the Center to the opposite, we travel 2/3 miles.  In order to save time, personal vehicles are often used, but these are heavy, represent a liability to the private-party owner of the vehicle, and result in serious soil compaction issues that deteriorate the quality of the lawn.

Most of our gardening activities require multiple back-and-forth trips between garden work spaces and utility sheds on foot with wheelbarrows.  The transport time on foot costs us significant labor hours, which could be put to better use at the times we are fortunate enough to have our valuable personnel on the premises.

We seek to acquire a John Deere Gator utility vehicle to supplement- or largely replace- wheelbarrow trips during gardening and grounds maintenance activities.  The cargo box holds roughly the equivalent of 4 wheelbarrows, while the towing hitch enables us to add a garden cart to further expand the carrying capacity.  The utility vehicle would facilitate quicker trips across the Horticulture Center, while the flotation tires would permit us to traverse virtually any terrain without adding to the soil compaction problems already present.  The vehicle could also be used to reduce the physical effort facing individuals with compromised mobility when traversing the ground, thereby enabling them to continue making their most-welcomed contributions to the Center with less fatigue or chance of further strain.

Our campaign will raise funds towards the purchase of a gently used machine with a remaining service life of 8 – 10 years.
