School of Theatre and Dance Call to Arms!

When it comes to actor training, one of the most important skills an actor can have in their toolbox is stage combat training. Because of the heightened circumstances that take place in scenes involving physical violence, it is critical for actors to have this training in order to keep everyone safe. Part of the “tools of the trade” in the stage combat industry are “stage weapons.” From swords, knives, guns and everything in between, these are pieces of equipment that resemble real weapons but are specifically designed for safety and longevity in a theatrical environment.

The challenge we face here at Illinois State University’s School of Theatre and Dance is that we no longer have the equipment needed to adequately offer these training opportunities. Your donation will help supply our students and program with the tools needed to be trained in this particular art form, thereby making them better prepared for the professional world. Our needs have been broken down into three phases:

Phase 1 (Immediate Needs) = $7,100  GOAL REACHED!!!

Phase 1 is for equipment needed in courses that are currently offered in the course catalog coupled with the need to teach students about contemporary violence. Examples of this equipment include Rapier & Dagger sets, Hollywood-style Single Swords, Knives, and Theatrical Firearms. Many students around the country graduate each year without a base understanding of these essentials.

Phase 2 (Short-Term Needs) = + $5,000  GOAL REACHED!!!

With the completion of Phase 1 of our crowdfunding campaign, the School of Theatre and Dance looks to provide their students with the opportunity to expand training into different disciplines within the combat arts. New courses would be constructed if the proper equipment was made available. In this situation, we already have some of the necessary equipment to provide these courses. However, we would need enough for an entire course and create the accompanying courses to properly delineate the difference between the disciplines. Examples of this equipment include Smallswords and Hand-and-a-Half Broadswords.

Phase 3 (Long-Term Needs) = + $8,000  STILL ACCEPTING GIFTS!!!

With the completion of Phase 2 of our crowdfunding campaign, the School of Theatre and Dance looks to provide their students with the opportunity to expand training even further into different disciplines within the combat arts. In these situations, we would need to purchase all new equipment to provide these new courses. Once acquired, we would create the accompanying courses to properly delineate the difference between the disciplines. Examples of this equipment include Single-Hand Broadsword & Shield sets and Quarterstaffs.

If we are able to accomplish these three phases of our campaign, the School of Theatre and Dance will be able to create one of the most comprehensive stage combat training programs in the country. We hope you will join us by answering our Call to Arms!
