Powering towards the leading edge
Founded in 2005, the Illinois State University Solar Car Team has participated in races across the nation and the world. This is a student team who design, build, and compete internationally against other colleges and universities. Our team is one of the few teams from schools without an engineering program, yet we are very competitive in the United States. Most recently we finished 5th in the 2016 FSGP and 3rd in the 2015 FSGP.
We are currently in the design phase for our newest generation car, which we hope to be the most competitive car Illinois State has ever built. We are taking every measure possible to make sure we are at the top of the leader board. This year the organizing body of the race has made significant changes in the rules, requiring teams to really push the edge of technology and design.
With the changes that were put into place, we need to focus on technology that will make us more efficient. One of the biggest aspects of this is to improve our battery technology. We would like to upgrade to Lithium Sulfer batteries, which are lighter and even more efficient than the Lithium Ion batteries we use now.
While we are competitive in our races, we are also one of the lowest budget teams in existence. We turn to you and our sponsors to raise the necessary budget it takes to race every year. This project provides students with a unique experience to apply classroom education to a real project and pave the way for sustainable transportation. We hope that this year is the year we can be the most competitive ever and bring home the win that really put Illinois State on the map for this competition!
