A Note from Bassist Andrew Ryan

May 22, 2017

Dear String Project Friends:

We are all inspired by different teachers and circumstances.  Here is a note from 9 Horses bassist Andrew Ryan on how he got where he is today.

I had the amazing opportunity to study with the visionary bassist and composer Francois Rabbath in Paris.  Studying with Francois was like being broken down and built up as a whole new player and musician.  The way he focused on mindfulness and basic technique, while always keeping an ear out for great sound and tone changed my approach to the bass forever. He’s also an exceptionally kind and generous human being, who brews a mean cup of Turkish coffee.

Thank you for supporting our project!

A Note from Violinst Sara Caswell

May 16, 2017

Dear String Project Friends:

We are all inspired by different teachers and circumstances.  Here is a note from 9 Horses violinist from Sara Caswell on how she got where she is today.

I had two teachers I still consider my mentors even though both have passed.

Josef Gingold (with whom I studied classical violin for four years). The most beautiful music is that which comes directly from the heart, be it joy or sorrow, solace or exuberance. The depth & passion in a single shift of his will forever send shivers down my spine. Josef was a teacher who taught through encouragement & positive reinforcement rather than highlighting their faults.

David Baker (with whom I studied jazz for twenty-some years): no matter a student’s age, ability, or background, David had the rare skill to read his student’s needs & by what means to effectively address them. Even as a shy 8-year old kid, I always felt understood & inspired by him and to this day continue to realize how his presence has shaped me personally, musically, & pedagogically.

Thank you for supporting our project!

A Note from Composer/Mandolinist Joseph Brent

May 10, 2017

Dear Friends of String Project:

We are all inspired by different teachers and circumstances as we move through life. Here is a note from 9 Horses composer and mandolinist Joseph Brent on how he got where he is today:

"In my early 20s, I went to Savona, Italy to study with mandolin master Carlo Aonzo. From Prof. Aonzo I learned the standard classical repertoire of the mandolin, but also music from the Northern and Neapolitan Italian tradition. Moreover, he instilled in me a discipline and rigor to my practice habits that I still apply today to my own music in any genre."

(Even the best of us need discipline and rigor in our practice habits!!)

Thanks for supporting our campaign- this project is bound to energize and inspire our program!
